Cannabis Use in Women´s Health

Cannabis Use in Women´s Health

(Chatelaine, 2018)

Women are a huge potential target in the medical cannabis market. Women are looking for alternative and plant-based remedies for health, lifestyle, wellness and potential alternative therapies for conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, chemotherapy and neuropathic pain.

Cannabis fits into that.

There are emerging studies which prove the use of medical cannabis to alleviate the pain and stress of periods. Also, emerging research does suggest an association between cannabis use and menstrual cycle disruptions. Scientist believe cannabis may be so effective at relieving menstrual pain because of the high concentration of endocannabinoid receptors found in the female reproductive tract, uterus and lining of the uterus.

Months ago, a Harvard cannabis study is proving the medical properties of cannabis for menstrual pain. Specifically, the study requires 400 women to track their menstrual symptoms over the course of a few months during which they will administer cannabis suppositories. The cannabis suppositories contained 60mg of THC and 10mg of CBD and were designed to help ease stress and pain from cramps. The Dr. Mary Clifton, licensed New York State medical cannabis provider and an expert in medical cannabis affirms “there´s also plenty of clinical research where patients have been studied and seeing reduction in pain”.

Cannabis legalization is creating an insatiable appetite for information. Scientists known more about the short- and long-term effects of cannabis. There is more evidence from observation studies which suggests that cannabis use could help alleviate menstrual pain and researches hope the Harvard study will pave the way to clinical trials in the future (Leafly, 2018).
